Johnnie Mae Brown was born on June 3, 1939, to Alberta Young and Johnny Brown in Jackson,
Mississippi. They migrated to New Orleans, LA for a period-of-time, and eventually moved to
Long Beach, CA where they made home with her beloved mother and sister Lucille, affectionately
known as, TT, who both preceded her in meeting our Lord.
Johnnie graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, "Home of Champions and
Scholars", class of 1957. She was a proud Jackrabbit"! She furthered her education at Long Beach
CC-School of Nursing. She married Herbert Johnson and mothered five children - Donald Noel
Johnson, Joey Andre Johnson, Christopher Joseph Johnson, Daphne Doreen Johnson-Stewart
and Cameron Dion Johnson. She believed in her Lord Jesus Christ and believed in teaching it to
children. She was an avid Sunday school teacher and faithful member of several Baptist churches
both in Long Beach, CA and later in Las Vegas, NV. Johnnie Mae was a songstress, she loved her
music and, she briefly sang with Motown Records. She'd sing a song at the drop of a hat, and mind
you, loud and proud.
While living in Long Beach, Johnnie met and married Walter Lawson and upon retirement they
moved to Las Vegas, NV, where she lived the remainder of her life. She gave her final goodbye on
February 7, 2024. Johnnie Mae prayed hard-always, for her children and loved ones; and she
played hard--she loved her bingo and slot machines. She was great cook-no recipe needed, a
caring homemaker, and a faithful woman to her beliefs, always hopeful for the future;" Can't", was
not, in her vocabulary!
Johnnie always prided herself in being the best mother/grandmother, person and friend that she
could be. She took pride in her family and in their accomplishments. Johnnie Mae was
preceded in death by two of her children, Donald and Daphne. She is survived by three of her
children, Joey, Chris and Cameron, her nieces Kelly Best, Carla Best, Sherry Best and Janet
Best-Smith, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, grand-nieces, grand nephews and
friends. Johnnie Mae, you will be truly missed and forever loved lady. Job well done! If Roses Grow In Heaven
If roses grow in heaven,
Lord please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there’s an ache within my heart
that will never go away.
